Trade the chaotic energy of the Red City for the spiritual serenity of Fes on this transformative 3-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour. This isn’t just a transfer; it is a sensory odyssey through the heart of the Maghreb.
Imagine the scent of wild thyme drifting through the High Atlas air, the feeling of cooling terracotta clay at ancient Kasbahs, and the profound, heavy silence of the Sahara under a canopy of a million stars. From the snow-capped peaks to the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, this itinerary connects Morocco’s two imperial capitals via the country’s most dramatic landscapes.
Your journey begins at 08:00 AM. Leaving the heat of Marrakech behind, we ascend into the fresh, crisp air of the High Atlas Mountains. The drive conquers the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m), where the landscape shifts from lush plains to rugged, mineral-rich peaks.
By midday, we reach the legendary Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. As you walk through its ancient, labyrinthine alleys, run your hands over the textured red earth walls that have stood for centuries. This fortified village is a masterclass in clay architecture and a photographer’s dream.
Continuing East, we travel the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs.” Passing El Kelaa M’Gouna—the Valley of Roses—the air often carries a faint floral sweetness during the spring harvest. We end the day in the dramatic Dades Valley, where the rock formations (known as “Monkey Toes”) glow deep orange in the twilight.
After a traditional Moroccan breakfast, we head toward Tinghir. Here, you will wander through a lush oasis where the sound of water rushing through irrigation channels provides a cooling respite from the sun. A short drive takes us to the spectacular Todra Gorge, a limestone canyon where 300-meter vertical walls create a narrow, awe-inspiring corridor.
As the afternoon sun lengthens, the landscape turns arid and vast. We arrive at Merzouga, the gateway to the deep desert. Here, you abandon modern transport for the “Ship of the Desert.” A guided camel trek takes you into the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes.
Watch as the sand shifts color—from yellow to ochre to intense violet—as the sun sets. Your destination is a luxury desert camp. The night concludes with the crackle of a campfire, the rhythm of Berber drums, and a sky so clear you can trace the Milky Way.
From Dunes to Ancient Medinas
Wake early. The silence of the desert sunrise is a spiritual experience, painting the dunes in soft pastels. After breakfast at camp, we begin the journey North.
The route follows the Ziz Valley, a green ribbon of date palms cutting through the desert rock. We pause for lunch in Midelt, nestled between the Middle and High Atlas ranges. As we climb further, the scenery transforms dramatically into the cedar forests of Azrou. Keep your camera ready for the Barbary Macaques—playful wild monkeys that are unique to this region.
Our final stop before the city is Ifrane. With its alpine chalets and manicured gardens, it feels startlingly European. Finally, as the sun dips, we arrive in Fes, the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities, dropping you at your accommodation around 17:00 PM.
The total distance is approximately 1,000 to 1,100 km (620+ miles). While a direct drive is shorter, this tour loops south to include the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert, breaking the journey into three manageable scenic legs.
Yes. We can arrange a 4×4 transfer directly to the luxury camp for anyone who finds camel riding uncomfortable. You will still enjoy the sunset and the camp experience without the physical trek.
Yes, our luxury camps are powered by solar energy. You will have electricity to charge your phones and cameras, and most camps offer ensuite bathrooms with hot showers. WiFi is often available, though signal strength can vary in the remote dunes.
The ideal times are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). During these months, daytime temperatures are pleasant (20°C-30°C), and nights are cool but not freezing, making the camel trek and camping experience perfect.
