Ait Ben Haddou

A UNESCO-listed fortress of clay and stone, the most famous ksar in the Ounila Valley and a masterpiece of earthen architecture.

Ait Ben Haddou is perhaps the most iconic image of pre-Saharan architecture. This fortified village (ksar) was once a vital stop on the caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. Its red-mud buildings, stacked along a hillside, create a breathtaking silhouette. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and remains one of the most photographed places in Morocco. Crossing the river to enter the ksar feels like stepping back centuries in time.
